BRIENZ, SWITZERLAND

Our usual travel style involves a laid-back, "we'll-get-there-when-we-get-there" vibe. But this time, oh boy, we were on a mission! Our timetable was more packed than a suitcase overstuffed with souvenirs, as we raced from Montreux to Brienz.

We kicked off our day at the crack of dawn, hopping on a train to Spiez. Just when we thought we could catch our breath, bam! Another train to Interlaken entered the scene. And because we clearly hadn't had enough cardio for the day, we hopped on a bus to Brienz.

Why, you inquire? We were on a strict timeline because we had a hot date with a boat at the Interlaken dock. If we missed the boat we would not be able to get one until the next day. Talk about pressure!

The boat was just the warm-up act because, after that aquatic adventure, we took a funicular to the Grandhotel Giessbach. Because when life gives you the option between a regular hotel and one that requires a funicular ride, you choose the one that adds a touch of adventure to your stay. It's like leveling up in the game of travel – next stop, Grandhotel Giessbach.

Grandhotel Giessbach was like stepping into a fairytale where luxury and nature collided in the most enchanting way possible. The hotel perched on the mountainside like a majestic eagle's nest, offering panoramic views that could make even the most well-traveled jaws drop.  From the moment we set foot in the lobby, it felt like we were characters in a classic novel, where every detail exuded elegance and charm. The staff, dressed in attire that seemed straight out of a period drama, welcomed us with warmth and a touch of old-world grace.

Our room transcended its purpose as a mere resting spot; it unfolded as a haven of comfort, offering a view that could rival a living postcard. Looking out of our window, we were treated to the awe-inspiring sight of a spectacular waterfall boasting 14 tiers, gracefully plummeting 400 meters to join the embrace of Lake Brienz below.

Dining at the hotel was an experience in itself. The restaurant itself felt like a sanctuary for food enthusiasts, a gastronomic haven where every element was crafted with precision. We opted for the chef's daily prix fixe meal, a delightful seven-course affair unfolded. Each course was perfectly portioned, and the dishes resembled art masterpieces on the plate. The meal, a symphony of flavors, showcased a harmonious blend of local culinary treasures and international delights, all sourced right from the property and prepared with a touch of freshness that lingered on our palate.

The architecture of Grandhotel Giessbach is a testament to timeless elegance and a harmonious integration with its breathtaking natural surroundings. Perched like a regal crown on the mountainside, the hotel's design seamlessly blends classic charm with alpine sophistication.  The exterior, adorned with ornate detailing, evokes a sense of grandeur reminiscent of a bygone era. Its traditional Swiss chalet style, with steeply pitched roofs and intricately carved wooden elements, pays homage to the rich architectural heritage of the region. The warm hues of the façade harmonize with the natural tones of the landscape, creating a picturesque tableau against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains

The architectural layout cleverly takes advantage of the hotel's elevated position. Terraces and balconies strategically placed offer commanding views of the Giessbach Falls, Lake Brienz, and the surrounding Alps. It's an architectural triumph that not only showcases the beauty of the building but also frames the natural wonders that lie just beyond its walls.

As we explored the meticulously landscaped gardens, these artistic pieces emerged like silent storytellers, adding an extra layer of charm to the enchanting atmosphere. Strategically placed throughout the grounds, the sculptures range from classic figures to contemporary art pieces, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Each sculpture seems to have found its perfect spot, contributing to the overall aesthetic while complementing the lush greenery and the backdrop of the Alps. The hotel has great taste in their selection of statues. One statue in a hidden alcove in particular captured the beauty and  essence of Mary Kay in white marble.

Stepping inside, the interior unfolds with a graceful transition, offering a perfect balance of opulence and comfort. The lobby, with its rich wood paneling and plush furnishings, exudes a welcoming ambiance. The large windows frame panoramic views, allowing natural light to cascade into the spaces, further enhancing the connection with the stunning outdoor scenery.

The pièce de résistance of Grandhotel Giessbach's natural spectacle is undoubtedly the majestic Giessbach Falls. Cascading down the mountainside with unrivaled grace, this 14-tiered waterfall is a mesmerizing spectacle that captivates all who are fortunate enough to witness its breathtaking descent. The sound of rushing water becomes a soothing symphony, echoing through the surroundings and creating a serene ambiance. It's as if nature itself is playing a tranquil melody, inviting us to pause, reflect, and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty that surrounded us.

As we bid farewell to Grandhotel Giessbach, the historic funicular becomes our final chariot, gently carrying us down the mountainside, weaving through the lush landscape we've come to adore. The panoramic views, a kaleidoscope of greenery and Alpine vistas, bid us adieu as we descend. With each passing moment, we reflect on the enchanting experiences, the elegant architecture, the symphony of the Giessbach Falls, and the culinary delights that made our stay truly unforgettable. The funicular ride serves as a metaphorical curtain call to our Alpine escapade, leaving us with a profound sense of gratitude for the moments of tranquility, luxury, and natural splendor that Grandhotel Giessbach bestowed upon us. As we depart, we carry with us not only cherished memories but also a longing to return to this idyllic haven in the Swiss mountains.

We are William and Mary Kay. This is our blog about the next journey in our lives. We have always shared a love of travel and have visited many parts of the world, but there is so much more to see and experience. After separating ourselves from the obligations of work and possessions we are free to walk this beautiful planet and immerse ourselves in the rich cultures and meet the wonderful people with whom we share this planet. We are both interested in art, history, archaeology and culture and hope to volunteer to keep and maintain historical and environmental sites.  We live active lives and enjoy, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, hiking, snowshoe hiking, biking, zip lining and are up for almost any activity. This blog is to let our current and future friends know where we are and what we are doing. We are simply lost in the right direction.
