Cork, Ireland

Cork-Ireland.jpg

On our way to Killarney, we stopped in Cork so that we could meet up with a new friend we met while traveling in Portugal who lives in Cork. Due to work conflicts for Gerry, we were able to meet up with him for Cocktails. It was a shame that we did not have more time to spend in Cork because Gerry is into boating and there are some beautiful harbors a little south of Cork and there was a sailing competition going on that week.

Since we were only having an overnight stop in Cork, we thought it might be fun to book our stay in Student Housing for the University College Cork.  They use the student housing for gests during the summers to supplement the income.  It was actually quite comfortable and we had our own Bathroom and shower, so it was not much different than a motel room.

I took advantage of wandering around University Cork College campus since we were there. It is a pretty campus with a most imposing Visitor and Administration Building, that was the original college and class rooms when it was founded.

Besides the Visitor and Administration building there was and other building that caught my eye. The The Crawford Observatory  that was constructed in 1878,

Cork City Gaol

Cork City Gaol is an important part of Corks historical and cultural heritage. It was known for being an overcrowded prison with high walls which housed both male and female prisoners who committed crimes within the city boundary .

Well kept and informative, also scary enough to keep you on the straight and narrow. There are many stories about previous prisoners to read around the jail as well as the governor. The prisoners were weighed when they entered and then every now and then to ensure that they were not stealing food from others and that no one was taking their food.

Bill&MaryKay.jpg

We are William and Mary Kay. This is our blog about the next journey in our lives. We have always shared a love of travel and have visited many parts of the world, but there is so much more to see and experience. After separating ourselves from the obligations of work and possessions we are free to walk this beautiful planet and immerse ourselves in the rich cultures and meet the wonderful people with whom we share this planet. We are both interested in art, history, archaeology and culture and hope to volunteer to keep and maintain historical and environmental sites.  We live active lives and enjoy, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, hiking, snowshoe hiking, biking, zip lining and are up for almost any activity. This blog is to let our current and future friends know where we are and what we are doing. We are simply lost in the right direction.
