St. Thomas
We bid farewell to Dorla and Gary once they ferried us on their dinghy to SMX Airport for our flight to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. It marked Mary Kay's inaugural experience flying on a propeller plane.

Locating our apartment proved a bit challenging since it lacked a conventional address, identified only by a lot number. However, we managed to pinpoint its exact location by dropping a pin on a map, revealing its proximity to Saint Anne's Chapel in the Frenchtown area of Charlotte Amelie. After some navigation, the taxi driver successfully found the unnamed street where our apartment was situated.

The apartment offered a lovely vantage point, providing us with a sweeping 270-degree view of the surroundings.

From our vantage point, we could observe both adjacent harbors, witnessing the regular arrival of cruise ships. Additionally, below us, the sea plane terminal nestled in the small harbor provided a captivating spectacle of water takeoffs and landings, resembling an aerial ballet.

On our second day on the island, following our grocery shopping and a brief exploration of Charlotte Amalie, we paused for a drink at a nearby restaurant, French Quarter Bistro, just a stone's throw from our new residence. It was there that we encountered Sara and Mark, a couple who often vacation in St. Thomas. They kindly invited us to join them on a trip to Water Island the following day. Excited about the opportunity, we promptly made arrangements for the excursion.

Mark and Sara graciously picked us up bright and early, and we set off to Crown Bay Marina to board a ferry bound for Water Island.Upon arrival,we are greeted by the island's inviting atmosphere, characterized by its laid-back charm . The island's small size makes it ideal for exploring on foot or by renting a golf cart, allowing visitors to meander through quaint streets and discover secluded coves. So as soon as we arrived, we wasted no time in grabbing our golf carts to explore the island's attractions.
Our first stop was The Crossing to grab some shaved ice and check out the local art. as soon as we walked up, the wonderfully sweet womwn who runs the the stand made us feel ike family. The shaved ice was so refreshing and the art beautiful.

After our refreshing break we were off to explore some of the history of the Island. Fort Segarra, stands as a testament to the island's rich history and strategic significance. Built during World War II, Fort Segarra was originally intended to serve as a coastal defense installation, safeguarding the waters surrounding St. Thomas and protecting vital naval interests in the Caribbean.

While never fully completed or armed, Fort Segarra remains a fascinating historical site, we were able explore the remnants of the fortification, including its tunnels and gun placements, while enjoying panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and neighboring islands.

We were now ready to relax at the beach,so we made our journey down to Honeymoon Beach. After stepping onto the soft sand, my companions and I decided to make the most of our day in paradise by renting beach chairs from one of the local vendors. Positioned just steps away from the water's edge, our rented chairs provided the perfect vantage point for soaking up the sun and enjoying the panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. As the day unfolded, we found ourselves enchanted by the natural beauty of Honeymoon Beach.

Floating and swimming in the warm waters of the cove was like stepping into a liquid embrace, enveloped by the gentle caress of the Caribbean Sea. As I surrendered to the buoyant rhythm of the waves, all sense of time seemed to slip away, replaced by a profound sense of serenity. With each stroke, I felt a profound connection to the natural world around me, as the sun-kissed waters sparkled like liquid diamonds beneath the azure sky. Immersed in this tranquil sanctuary, I reveled in the sheer joy of movement, allowing myself to be carried by the ebb and flow of the tide. It was a moment of pure bliss, where the worries of the world melted away, leaving only the sensation of weightlessness and the boundless expanse of the ocean stretching out before me.
After a leisurely afternoon stay at the beach, we eagerly hopped back onto our golf carts, ready to embark on our next adventure: indulging in fish tacos at Heidi's Honeymoon Cafe. The warm breeze tousled our hair as we navigated the island's winding roads, anticipation mounting with each passing moment. As we arrived at the quaint seaside eatery, the tantalizing aroma of freshly grilled fish filled the air, whetting our appetites. We settled into a cozy spot overlooking the azure waters, eagerly awaiting our culinary delight.

Back to the beach for morel fun in the water. As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, casting a golden glow across the beach, we reluctantly bid farewell to Honeymoon Beach. With memories of a perfect day spent in paradise etched into our minds, we boarded the ferry once again, knowing that the tranquility and beauty of this idyllic haven would forever hold a special place in our hearts.
Upon returning to the main island of St. Thomas, Mark and Sara treated us to a brief scenic tour en route to Red Hook for dinner. Along the way, they shared some of their favorite sights and viewpoints, offering us a glimpse into the island's beauty.

With it being Lobster night at the restaurant, I simply couldn't resist indulging in the dish. The lobster proved exceptionally fresh, locally caught just the day before. Its tender, flavorful meat provided a perfect conclusion to our outing to Water Island.

We arrived atDuffy's Love Shack which is located in a parking lot in Red Hook. However, this lively establishment exudes island charm with its colorful décor and laid-back vibes, including its bathroom key that you can't lose misplace even with too much to drink.

The following day, we planned a beach day, brunch and sightseeing excursion with Mark and Sara, benefiting from their knowledge of the island and access to a car. They kindly picked us up, and en route to brunch, they treated us to a stop at Mountain Top.
As we ascended the winding roads to this iconic vantage point, anticipation mounted with each twist and turn. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a vibrant atmosphere buzzing with activity, from souvenir shops adorned with local crafts to bustling cafes serving up island delicacies.

However, it was the panoramic vista that truly stole the show, stretching as far as the eye could see, with neighboring islands dotting the horizon like jewels in the sea. From this lofty perch, we marveled at the natural beauty of the Caribbean, captivated by the splendor of St. Thomas from above.
Our next destination was Limetree Beach nestled along the shores of Frenchman's Bay within the Limetree Resort, where we savored brunch at the Lanai Restaurant. This charming eatery boasts the quintessential Caribbean beachfront dining experience, with its inviting patio overlooking the sea.

Invigorated by our Brunch we set off for the Elysian Beach Resort located on Cowpet Bay, which is one of Mark and Sara's favorite beaches for swimming and snorkeling.

As the day progressed, the sun gradually dispelled the clouds, unveiling perfect conditions for a kayaking excursion. Gliding atop the clear, shallow waters, we marveled at the coral and sea creatures below. Suddenly, we stumbled upon a sizable stingray, nearly half the size of our kayak, leisurely resting on the seabed. Moments later, a sea turtle gracefully emerged from the bay, swimming just a stone's throw away. Returning to the water felt invigorating, especially for MK after her shoulder surgery—it was both a joyous reunion and a test of her recovery.
We opted for a distinctive adventure: diving with underwater scooters while sporting bell-type helmets supplied with scuba tanks. This thrilling experience was offered by Boss Underwater Adventures. After booking the excursion online, we made our way to Yacht Haven Grand harbor, where we boarded the boat. To reach the harbor, we hopped onto one of the Safari Taxis—small trucks equipped with open bench seating—offering rides for just $2.00 each.

Upon arriving at the island cove, we received thorough instructions on how to operate the submersible scooters, ensuring our familiarity with the procedures and safe usage. Dividing into two groups, one group embarked on the submersible scooters while the other group enjoyed snorkeling in the bay We were in the group using the scooters..
The boat transported us to a nearby island, just 25 minutes from St. Thomas, where sheltered coves with reefs awaited our exploration with the diving scooters. En route, we sailed past Jeff Bezos' yacht, gracefully anchored in the harbor.

Putting my head into the submersible was moment of transition. As I put my head inside the helmet, there's a sense of anticipation tinged with excitement and perhaps a hint of trepidation. The world outside and my anxiety swiftly faded away, replaced by the subdued hiss of air the sound of my breathing echoing in the helmet and a clear view of the water and the reef below.

As the submersible started its descent, I could feel a subtle shift in pressure, a gentle reminder of the immense weight of the ocean pressing in from all sides. It's a sensation both physical and psychological. The pressure builds, and i could feel the subtle effects of decompression, so I continuaIly pinched my nose and blew to relieve the pressure. As I finally reached the desired depth, the sensation of decompression gave way to a profound sense of awe and wonder. Before me stretched a vast, unseen world, teeming with life and mystery—a world waiting to be explored
Gliding effortlessly through the water, propelled by the scooter, I felt like an underwater explorer on a mission. The sensation of freedom and weightlessness was surreal as I maneuvered through the vibrant coral reefs and explored hidden nooks and crannies of the underwater landscape. With each passing moment, I found myself immersed in a mesmerizing spectacle of marine life. Colorful fish darted playfully around me, while curious sea creatures peered out from their coral hideaways. It was as if I had stepped into a living, breathing aquarium, surrounded by nature's most captivating creations. All too soon we were motioned by diver guides that it was time to resurface. As I resurfaced, my heart still racing with excitement, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer beauty and wonder of the underwater world. The underwater submersible scooter had granted me a glimpse into a realm few have the privilege to explore—a realm of infinite possibilities and untold adventures and something I hope to do again.

During our time in St. Thomas, we made it a point to visit the three main breweries on the island, indulging in a delightful array of libations. St. John's Brewery, we explored their retail store and bar, savoring a refreshing blend of brewed Rootbeer with Vanilla Rum alongside a delectable toasted coconut brown. The Tap Haus, where we were treated to an Untitled Art Chocolate Malt Amore Pastry Stout and Parisian Ales French Toast Brunch, each sip a decadent journey of flavor. Frenchtown Brewery, a charming microbrewery run by a passionate husband and wife team, conveniently located just down the street from our apartment. Here, we savored their lager while striking up a conversation with fellow beer enthusiasts, including Luanne and Bob from Wisconsin, whom we later joined for a delightful dinner.
We walked to the 99 Steps a historic testament to the island's rich past. Ascending from the bustling streets below, these centuries-old steps wind their way upwards, flanked by lush foliage and vibrant tropical blooms. As I climbed, each step seems to whisper tales of bygone eras, echoing the footsteps of generations past. Reaching the summit, there are breathtaking panoramic views of the island and its sparkling azure waters.

Charlotte Amalie boasted excellent dining options such as Greengoes Mexican and Amici's Italian. It also featured charming shops, though there was a surplus of jewelry stores lining the main streets. Nestled amidst picturesque alleys were distinctive restaurants and boutiques, while businesses along the waterfront added to the vibrant scene.
