Vatican City

Since we were visiting Rome, we knew we had to visit Vatican City, the world's tiniest sovereign state nestled within the heart of the city. It is an extraordinary journey through time, art, and spirituality. Our visit here was nothing short of mesmerizing.

We started our journey with a visit to the Vatican Museums. Our visit to the Vatican Museums was a journey into the depths of human creativity and history that left an indelible mark on my soul. As we joined a throng of fellow visitors at the entrance. The excitement in the air was palpable. As I finally stepped inside, the sheer magnitude of the place struck me. We were greeted by a breathtaking sight. In the distance, against the backdrop of a serene garden courtyard, the iconic dome of the Sistine Chapel soared majestically into the sky. Its imposing presence seemed to transcend the confines of Vatican City, reaching towards the heavens.

As we walked closer to the garden courtyard, the dome's intricate details became more apparent. The frescoes that adorned its interior were a symphony of color and form, a visual narrative of biblical stories and divine creation. Even from a distance, we could appreciate the artistry that had gone into every brushstroke, every exquisite detail.

The courtyard itself was a haven of tranquility. Lush greenery surrounded a central fountain, its waters glistening in the sunlight. Statues of saints and historical figures stood sentinel, adding a sense of reverence to the scene. The juxtaposition of the meticulously manicured garden and the dome's grandeur created a harmonious balance of nature and human achievement.

Stepping into the Sistine Chapel for the first time, I felt a mix of excitement and reverence coursing through my veins. As I approached the entrance, anticipation built within me, knowing that I was about to witness one of the world's most renowned artistic wonders. As I crossed the threshold, my eyes were immediately drawn upwards, instinctively following the gaze of other visitors. The sheer immensity of the space struck me, with its high ceilings and grand architecture. The chapel exuded a sacred aura, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of privilege to stand within its hallowed walls.

Raising my head, I beheld the famous ceiling, and my breath caught in my throat. The vibrant colors and intricate details of Michelangelo's masterpieces enveloped me. "The Creation of Adam" captivated my attention, its iconic imagery evoking a profound sense of wonder. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the depiction of God and Adam reaching towards each other, symbolizing the eternal connection between humanity and divinity.

As I continued to gaze at the ceiling, I immersed myself in the stories depicted in each panel. Michelangelo's genius came to life before me, breathing vitality into biblical narratives. The figures seemed so real, I half-expected them to step out of the ceiling and fill the chapel with their presence.

My exploration didn't stop at the ceiling. The walls, adorned with frescoes by renowned Renaissance artists, held their own splendor. Each painting told a story, drawing me into the world of biblical narratives and saints. Botticelli's "Temptation of Christ" emanated serenity, while Perugino's "Christ Delivering the Keys to St. Peter" exuded grace and divinity. Silence enveloped the chapel, broken only by hushed whispers and the occasional gasp of fellow visitors. The atmosphere of reverence and contemplation seemed to seep into my very being, heightening my appreciation for the cultural and religious significance of the space

Reluctantly, we left the Sistine Chapel. The visit left an indelible mark on my soul, a testament to the limitless beauty and creativity that human beings are capable of achieving. It was an encounter that I will remember, a window into the magnificence of art and the depth of human expression.

Exiting the Sistine Chapel, we strolled  through the stunning Raphael Rooms, which showcase frescoes commissioned by Pope Julius II. The museums' vast corridors and halls house countless other artistic and historical treasures, provided us  enriching journey through  more human artistic creativity.

Stepping into St. Peter's Square in Vatican City was a moment of sheer awe and reverence. The grandeur of the square is simply overwhelming.  I couldn't help but feel dwarfed by the massive colonnades that encircle the square. The rows of statues perched atop these elegant, curved colonnades seemed to stand as silent sentinels, watching over the countless pilgrims and visitors who gathered here.

In the center, the ancient Egyptian obelisk stood as a symbol of continuity, connecting different epochs of history. The fountain's soothing murmur added a touch of tranquility to the bustling square. Everywhere I looked, there was a sense of anticipation and devotion, as people from all over the world gathered beneath the imposing facade of St. Peter's Basilica. It was a place where faith, history, and architecture converged, creating an experience that was nothing short of extraordinary. Adding to the mystique, we could see the balcony on the Apostolic Palace overlooking the square, where the Pope often appears to bless the faithful.  As a Catholic, visiting Vatican City held a spiritual significance for me, connecting me to the historic and the global political significance this city has represented and continues to represent to Catholic community and the world.

We are William and Mary Kay. This is our blog about the next journey in our lives. We have always shared a love of travel and have visited many parts of the world, but there is so much more to see and experience. After separating ourselves from the obligations of work and possessions we are free to walk this beautiful planet and immerse ourselves in the rich cultures and meet the wonderful people with whom we share this planet. We are both interested in art, history, archaeology and culture and hope to volunteer to keep and maintain historical and environmental sites.  We live active lives and enjoy, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, hiking, snowshoe hiking, biking, zip lining and are up for almost any activity. This blog is to let our current and future friends know where we are and what we are doing. We are simply lost in the right direction.
